Try These Other AR-Style Firearms if You Love the AR 15

When you are looking for an AR 15 for sale, you might come across a listing for an AR 10 or AR 12. What is the difference? What is an SBR or an AR pistol? Before you place a bid on an auction site you should know what each model is.

AR 15 For Sale

The AR 10 for Long-Action Round

A typical AR 15 is chambered in either 223 or 556, though many other calibers exist for AR 15s, such as the 300 Blackout. But, before Eugene Stoner created the AR 15, he used 762x51mm NATO rounds, not unlike those used by the AK 47, and dubbed the rifle the AR 10. There is a limit on the distance you can get from an AR 15 round. The AR 10, however, can use “long-action” rounds, such as the 308 Winchester. This often means AR 10s are longer, heavier, and carry fewer rounds.

The AR 12 Semi-Automatic Shotgun

Unlike the AR 10 and AR 15, the AR 12 does not fire rifle rounds. The AR 12 is a gas-operated, semi-automatic shotgun based on the AR platform, functioning similarly to the rifles it is based on. The 12-gauge shotgun uses a magazine, has a pistol grip, and a butt stock with a built-in recoil pad. It is light and uses a mag release and safety like the AR 15. These are tactical shotguns for use in competitions and shooting targets. They allow for a fast magazine change while hunting, making the AR 12 a multipurpose shotgun that is highly versatile.

AR Pistols for Smaller Calibers

ARs also come in what is referred to as an AR pistol. These have short barrels and no stock. This means either an exposed buffer tube or what is called a brace. They are often chambered in either 223 or 9mm, with a 7.5-inch or 4-inch barrel, respectively. The entire gun is shorter than 26 inches by definition. While it functions largely the same as a rifle-length AR 15, it falls under the definition of a pistol by the ATF. Vertical foregrips are illegal for use on an AR pistol, but not angled foregrips.

Short-Barreled Rifles to Use a Stock Attachment

SBRs are very similar to AR pistols. SBR stands for short-barreled rifle, which certainly sounds like the pistols above. The difference is that they can legally have a stock. However, it’s not as simple as throwing a stock on an AR pistol and calling it an SBR; that’s still illegal. Instead, an owner must file a tax stamp for $200 with the ATF, wait weeks, or months while it is approved, and, after approval, they may attach a stock to an AR pistol. SBRs are also popular suppressor platforms, as it’s easier to submit a tax stamp for an SBR and a suppressor, which costs another $200, at the same time. Both are long wait times for approval, so submitting at the same time takes less time than submitting at different times.
