3 Bottleneck Pistol Cartridges to Consider

The efficacy and value of bottlenecked cartridges have been recognized for well over a century. “Necking down” a cartridge case to accommodate a bullet of a smaller caliber allows for more volume and, therefore, more propellant. The result is a smaller caliber bullet with substantially improved velocity, range, and accuracy at a distance. The significant performance benefit conferred is responsible for the majority of popular rifle cartridges being bottlenecked. For whatever reason, the same has not been the case for most handgun cartridges, with some notable exceptions like the FN Five seveN. Next time you consider a handgun, keep those high-performance bottlenecked calibers in mind.

For decades, a bottlenecked pistol cartridge was actually the standard for just about half the planet. The militaries of the Soviet Union and their satellite states and the Chinese carried pistols chambered for the high-power 762x25mm Tokarev cartridge. The most common of those pistols were the Russian Tokarev and Chinese Tokarev copies. Originally based on a similar German Mauser pistol round, the 762x25mm still has a dedicated community of fans. Part of the appeal is that Tokarev ammunition and pistols chambered for it, notably the Tokarev itself and the Czech CZ 52, offer a whole lot of performance very inexpensively.

FN 57x28mm

Arguably the most famous and well-known more recent bottlenecked pistol cartridge is the FN 57x28mm from FN Herstal. The FN 57x28mm cartridge is an entirely proprietary creation of FN Herstal, developed for the accompanying FN P90 and FN Five seveN pistol. While it was designed for military and law enforcement use, the blistering performance and straight, flat accuracy of the FN 57x28mm cartridge has made it a niche favorite.

357 SIG

The 357 SIG, from SIG Sauer, is another example of superior performance achieved without excess recoil. The 357 SIG cartridge is most closely related to a necked-down 40 S&W, and most pistols chambered for 40 S&W can be converted to fire 357 SIG with a barrel change. The 357 SIG was designed to offer performance comparable to the sizable, powerful 357 Magnum. The size of the 357 Magnum, however, limits its use virtually exclusively to revolvers and has significant recoil. Necking down the 357 SIG allows for excellent velocity and performance with less recoil and significantly better capacity in a semi-automatic pistol.
