Which Accessories Are Worth Putting on Your Firearms?

There are more accessories on the market for firearms than you could feasibly count, but which do you need? There are some crossovers between rifles and pistol, such as flashlights, but a mag release may be a bigger concern on a handgun than your rifle. Here are some of the available accessories and whether they might be worth putting on your firearm.

Knights Armament

Flashlight

Whether it is an HK P30L or an AR 15, flashlights are worth the admittedly often high cost. There are two reasons for the flashlight. First, obviously, providing light when you are shooting in dark conditions, such as a personal range at night. Second, the added weight helps reduce recoil.

Laser

Lasers, unless they are integrated with the flashlight, are generally for more specialized shooters. They will not make you more accurate unless you are already a good shot. However, if you are using night vision, such as when hunting, lasers can help give you a good idea where the round will go, as optics are much less useful at night.

Optics

While the iron sights on your Knights Armament AR are likely fine, adding optics can help you acquire your target faster and give you a better sight picture. Plus, adding scopes can help you extend your effective range. Optics are generally worth it, but depend on how far you expect to shoot.

New Trigger

Unless you are going to take part in competitions, you probably do not need a new trigger. Some firearms, such as a Glock, can benefit from a new trigger connector, which will make the trigger less mushy. However, you can change from a curved to a flat trigger. This is mostly down to personal preference.

Mag Release

A bigger magazine release on your handgun can help those with small hands. The same goes for rifles. Otherwise, you may not need to modify the mag release.

Slide Release

Slide releases for both handguns and rifles are something you might want to swap out. Older Glocks, from Gen 4 and below often do not have an extended slide release, which makes it much easier to hit the slide lock. On an AR, you can get a BAD lever, which goes over the traditional “paddle” release and lets you hit the slide release without taking your hand off the trigger. This comes down to a firearm-by-firearm basis but is likely something you want to upgrade.
