Look for These 4 “Farm Guns” for Pest Control
For farmers, ranchers, and members of a number of other occupations, pest control on their property is not just a matter of convenience. Their livelihood often depends on it. For decades, shotguns were considered the go-to “farm gun,” the all-purpose pest control and small game solution. Shotguns certainly still have their place as farm guns, but firearm innovation has provided a number of other options as well. So unless you are a tactical farmer, your pest control needs fulfilled by a tricked-out Benelli M4, consider the following farm gun options.
Benelli M4 |
Ruger American in 17 HMR
The 17 HMR cartridge is made to order for longer-distance pest control. Created by the perpetual ammunition innovators at Hornady, 17 HMR was designed to be exceedingly far, fast, and flat. Hornady succeed, as 17 HMR features blazing velocity and flat trajectory. When it comes to a reasonable, reliable, and accurate vehicle for the cartridge, you cannot beat the Ruger American.
Beretta A300
The Beretta A300 harkens back to the quintessential farm gun platform—the shotgun. This is no beat-up double-barrel on nails above the door, however. The Beretta A300 offers a slimmer, more lightweight package than a great many shotguns on the market today. Its recoil pad takes the bite out of hotter or heavier shell loads, and its innovative assembly makes cleaning a breeze. Plus, nothing says “trustworthy scattergun” like the name Beretta.
Ruger Silent-SR ISB 10/22
For those with the patience for an NFA stamp and a penchant for the tacticool, there is no pest control farm gun substitute for the Ruger Silent-SR ISB 10/22. If there is any farm gun gauge or caliber as iconic as the 12 gauge shotgun, it is the 22 LR. It is also hard to get more iconic in the world of rimfire rifles than the Ruger 10/22. This updated iteration of the plinking classic features an integrally suppressed barrel assembly for pest control that will not bother the neighbors.
Kel-Tec CP33
It is not that often that a handgun is included in the running for an effective farm gun. The Kel-Tec CP33, however, has a whole lot going for it. First, there is its accuracy. Kel-Tec designed the CP33 for competition-level accuracy in 22 LR. Then there is the fact that one of their quad-stacked magazines holds no less than 33 cartridges. For those of the more Ruger Silent-SR ISB 10/22 persuasion, the Kel-Tec CP33 also features a threaded barrel out of the factory for suppressor hosting. In addition to being a high-capacity tack-driver, the CP33 is also just a whole lot of fun.
