You have just found an AR 15 for sale, and that is a great starting point. But how can you upgrade your new firearm to make it better? You will likely want to make a few modifications depending on your personal preferences and how you plan to use the rifle. Here are some of the best upgrades you can make to your AR 15.

Make the Trigger Smoother

If you are building a range toy or taking your AR 15 to competition, the first step is upgrading to a new trigger. Depending on whether you go with a mil-spec, single-stage, or two-stage trigger, you can increase the crispness of the trigger and reduce the pull weight. Single-stage triggers use a single movement and a lighter trigger pull, making them very crisp. However, they require force to engage, unlike two-stage triggers. A two-stage trigger option lets you take up most of the slack in the first stage with a little more pressure, about a pound, for the second stage. These are typically used on precision rifles.

Change the Muzzle Device

A typical AR 15 will likely come with a “birdcage” muzzle brake. It is a classic, but plenty of other muzzle devices are available. For example, a Rainier Arms Watchman will come with a RISE Advanced Flash Hider. Flash hiders live up to their name by hiding the muzzle flash. Brakes, compensators, and hybrids can help minimize the vertical movement of your gun, helping to keep you on target between shots and reduce the recoil you feel.

There are a wide variety of handguards available. While there used to be a debate on MLOK vs. Keymod, US SOCOM has chosen Magpul’s MLOK system. If you want the most possible real estate on your rifle for accessories, you can go with the classic quad rail with four Picatinny rails. This, however, is much heavier and has earned the nickname “cheese grater” for a reason.

An Ambidextrous Charging Handle

Upgrading your charging handle may not be necessary, but it can certainly add convenience. This modification can make using the charging handle smoother and faster. They are easier to use and more robust, adding durability to a part of the firearm that sees a lot of wear. If you are left-handed or use your right hand to brass check, an ambidextrous charging handle is essential.

The BAD Lever

The Battery Assist Device Lever, more commonly known as the BAD Lever, is another Magpul innovation proven to be an essential upgrade for AR 15s. It makes reloading faster by allowing you to drop the bolt with your firing hand after reloading on an empty mag. Plus, it removes the need to slap the paddle bolt release. A BAD Lever is worth adding to your AR, whether you are using a DPMS AR 15 that is finely tuned or putting together your AR piece by piece.
