4 Funny-Looking Guns to Check Out

From beautifully engraved Colt 1911s to the sophisticated elegance of an over under shotgun, a variety of firearms are widely considered beautiful examples of the form. Then there are the ones that are not so lucky and tend to be defamed as funny-looking, weird, or even downright ugly. Some of those ugly ducklings, however, whether it is the ultra-fun Kel Tec CP33 or an antique Astra 400, have a whole lot of value to offer beneath their unique facades. Here are a few to check out.

Kel Tec CP33

The Squirt Gun: Astra 400

The handguns of the world wars and the interwar period are becoming increasingly popular collector’s items. Celebrity sidearms like the Colt 1911, Browning Hi-Power and 1910, Luger P08, and the like are especially sought after. That is not the case with the surprisingly high-quality Spanish Astra 400 in 9mm Largo.

While often maligned for resembling a toy squirt gun, the Astra 400 is extremely well-made, resulting in an accurate and reliable pistol. Better still, that lack of attention means that it is often possible to find a well-maintained example that you can actually afford.

Stretched Shooter: The Judge Pistol

The uncommonly lengthy cylinder of the pistols of the Taurus Judge family makes for an awkward and unshapely-looking revolver. However, that stretched cylinder means the Judge pistol is chambered for 45 Colt, 45 Schofield, and 410 shotgun shells. Looking a little weird is a small price to pay for firepower that robust and versatile.

Austrian Bulk: Steyr Hahn M1912

The beefy, distinctive Steyr M1912, commonly known as the Steyr Hahn, was once described as being like a Colt 1911 drawn by Pablo Picasso. That is an accurate description, as the Steyr Hahn looks like a 1911 with extra pieces tacked onto its frame.

The thing is, the unique design responsible for the Steyr Hahn’s appearance made it one of the toughest, most reliable, and most respected handguns of WWI on either side. With an internal magazine, the ballistically-impressive 9x23mm Steyr cartridge was fed into the top of the pistol on an 8-round stripper clip.

Kel Tec CP33

No list of weird-looking guns would be complete without at least one Kel Tec firearm. In this case, it is the Kel Tec CP33. The Kel Tec CP33 is almost the size of a submachine gun, though extremely light for its size, and features an AR-style charging handle instead of a slide. It is also dead-eye tack-driver accurate, which makes sense as the “CP” in its name stands for “Competition Pistol.”

The Kel Tec CP33 offers a threaded barrel and the furniture to attach whatever optics and accessories strike your fancy. However, it is understandably best known for its factory-stock quad-stacked 22 LR magazine that boasts a capacity of 33. Once you experience the Kel Tec CP33, all other plinkers are likely to pale in comparison to this unconventional beast.
