4 Examples of the New Generation of Super-Hot Bottleneck Handgun Cartridges

Bottleneck pistol cartridges are nothing new. For decades, half of the world relied on bottleneck pistol rounds like the 762x25mm Mauser and Tokarev cartridges. While the bottleneck cartridge remains the rule rather than the exception for modern-day rifle cartridges, the opposite is true for pistols. However, with innovations over the last few decades by arms and ammo manufacturers like FN Herstal, the high-performing bottleneck pistol cartridge appears to be making a big comeback.

FN Five seveN

The FN 57mm Cartridge

Arguably the most well-known of the bottleneck handgun cartridges is the FN 57x28mm. A proprietary cartridge chambered for the FN Five seveN pistol and P90/PS90. The bottleneck cartridge premise is producing a high-velocity bullet by seating a relatively small caliber slug on a comparatively heavy load of power. That is what makes the FN 57x28mm such a flat, fast, and accurate cartridge. And with the recent introduction of the Ruger 57, the cartridge is garnering a considerable renewal of interest.

The Desert Eagle 429 DE Cartridge

No one can ever accuse Desert Eagle of doing anything in half measures when it comes to their handgun game. Enter the 429 DE. The Desert Eagle 429 DE’s closest mainstream cartridge relative is the 44 Magnum. However, the 429 DE is a proprietary cartridge necked down from the 50 AE parent cartridge. It is compatible with the bolt and magazine of a Desert Eagle pistol chambered for 50 AE. The increase in size, however, gives a nearly 50% increase in energy compared to a standard 44 Magnum load. That is a big, fast, powerful bullet.

The Tokarev 762x25mm Cartridge

While the Tokarev 762x25mm pistol cartridge dates back to the early 20th-century, this round has been experiencing a revival in recent years. Although it has yet to come stateside, the Dominion Arms P762 is a hit in Canada. It looks like a Sig P226 but is chambered for the red hot Tokarev round. For the purists, however, Tokarev pistols and the powerhouse CZ 52 remain available stateside and relatively inexpensively. New loads of 762x25mm are being produced with non-corrosive ammo for the modern enthusiast.

The FK BRNO 75mm FK Cartridge

Finally, a bottleneck cartridge that would even give the DE 429 pangs of insecurity, the monster 75mm FK cartridge from FK BRNO. This entirely proprietary cartridge has no parent case, created by the Czech FK BRNO arms company. There are only two models of handgun, both from FK BRNO, that are chambered to accommodate this massive cartridge, and both are not inexpensive. However, with astronomical velocity and range, there are no doubt many takers willing to shell out.
