What Is an AR 15?

The AR 15 often gets a bad rap from people who are not firearms enthusiasts. Often erroneously labeled an “assault weapon,” the AR 15 is one of the most popular firearms in the United States, and not because it is a fully automatic weapon. Whether you are looking for an AR 15 for sale or are simply trying to learn more about the firearm, here are some facts about the AR 15 and AR platform in general.

AR 15 for Sale

It Is Not Fully Automatic

While many think that “AR” stands for assault rifle, it actually stands for “ArmaLite,” the AR platform’s original manufacturer. In fact, the vast majority of AR 15s are not fully automatic at all, and the fully automatic ones are often prohibitively expensive. It has the same fire rate as most of the hunting rifles of yesteryear, with a single round fired with each pull of the trigger. The original M16, which the AR 15 is based on, was often fully automatic or fired with three-round bursts, but these were exclusively available to the military.

Variety of Calibers

The AR 15 by itself comes in a wide variety of calibers. The most common are 556 and 223, but there are many, many other calibers you can find an AR in. Others include, for example, 300 Blackout. Other AR platforms work similarly to the AR 15, such as the AR 10, which you can find in calibers such as 308 Winchester. The AR 12 appears to be an AR 15, but is a magazine-fed shotgun. However, the controls are very similar, and anyone familiar with an AR 15 will be able to easily use an AR 12.

Modularity

AR 15 platforms are very easy to upgrade and modify. There are more aftermarket parts for the AR 15 than nearly any other firearm, from sights to handguards, triggers to magazines, and grips to stocks. However you want your AR 15 to be set up, from competition-ready to a range toy or perfect for hunting in the backcountry, it is easy to get the AR 15 you want.

It Is Easy to Use

The controls across nearly every AR 15 are the same. The charging handle may look different depending on which upgrade is used, but they all function the same by pulling the bolt back into battery. The safety is the same. The trigger is the same, though the trigger pull, or how many pounds of pressure are needed, may vary. However, the overall controls are all the same, making it very easy to pick up a new AR and immediately know how to use it.

The Swiss Army Knife of Rifles

As previously stated, the AR 15 can fulfill a number of roles. With upgrades that make the firearm lighter, with a lighter trigger pull and a wider magwell, it can be a competition-ready rifle. An optic for range and a higher caliber, and it is perfect for hunting deer. It truly is the Swiss Army knife of rifles.
