A Federal Firearms License, or FFL, is something anyone hoping to buy or sell a gun will need to be familiar with. If you are going to be selling firearms as a business, you will need one. This is especially true with items that have extra regulations, such as a fully automatic rifle. Whether you are making your first purchase, getting the Barrett 50 cal of your dreams, or are looking to start a private gunsmithing business, here is what you need to know about FFLs.

What is a Federal Firearms License?

The FFL is a license that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, or BATFE and more commonly known as the ATF, issues that allows a person to be in the firearms business. This could mean manufacturing, gunsmithing, or buying and selling firearms. It can also mean you are a licensed collector.

Who Needs One?

If you are buying a fully automatic MP5K, you do not need an FFL. However, if you are selling one, you do, as the ATF regulates it, because it is an automatic weapon. If you are not in the business of selling firearms but are making a private sale of a semi-automatic MP5K PDW, you do not need a license as it does not carry the same regulations. Gunsmiths, ammunition manufacturers, importers, and gun manufacturers all need different types of FFLs. If you intend on collecting antique or curio firearms, you can apply for an FFL that will allow the gun to be shipped to your home.

 What Should Gun Buyers Know?

If you buy a gun online or sell it to someone in certain states, it must go through an FFL transfer. There is a background check and paperwork involved, and the FFL will usually charge you a fee for their services. If you receive an FFL, that means you can have the firearms sent straight to your door, as you have already gone through a vigorous vetting process. This makes it possible to look for used guns for sale where you might turn a profit, and you also get access to dealer-only firearms that only someone with a valid FFL can possess.

 How Much Does It Cost?

The cost depends on the type of FFL you get. The most common, a Type 1 for firearms dealers and gunsmiths, is $200 with a $90 renewal fee. For Type 3 and 6, which are for curio and relic firearms and manufacturing ammo, it is only $30, but you cannot do an FFL transfer. Importers and manufacturers of destructive devices, Types 9, 10, and 11, are all $3,000. Be sure to check with the ATF to help decide which is right for you and how much it will cost.
