4 Large Handguns Every Gun Enthusiast Should Look For
There is a certain mystique around really big handguns. There is also a natural wariness about them, as large handguns tend to be large caliber handguns, and those have a reputation for producing robust recoil. However, the reality is that while some pack a feisty kick, some feature milder recoil than a high-quality, well-balanced mid-caliber handgun like a Beretta 9mm. Regardless, all the following large handguns are either a whole lot of fun to shoot, an experience every gun enthusiast should have, or both.

Ruger 357 Revolver
Classic Wheelgun – Ruger 357 Revolver
 The Ruger 357 revolver
line is an iconic firearm family and perhaps the quintessentially
large, powerful handgun. A full-size Ruger GP100 or Blackhawk chambered
in 357 Magnum is around 2.5 pounds. That kind of heft is good news when
you are firing such a beefy cartridge. Even with the weight to draw off
some of that recoil, though, there is still a substantial kick. It is
power worth experiencing, however. And the good news is, shooting 38
Specials, which the Ruger 357 revolver can also accommodate, is like
popping off rimfires.
50 Cal Beast – Magnum Research Desert Eagle
Maybe the good people at Magnum Research heard about a full-size
revolver chambered in 357 Magnum weighing 2.5 pounds and took it as a
challenge. That is because their Desert Eagle chambered in 50 AE clocks
in at 4.5 pounds. That is a whole lot of pistol, and it has to be in
order to soak up the recoil of a handgun round that big. The extra
weight and the gun’s specially designed auto recoil do tame the kick
some, making it only marginally sharper than 44 Magnum. For those
interested in a slightly less colossal Desert Eagle, there are also
models of the pistols chambered for 357 Magnum and 44 Magnum.
Lord of the Plinkers – Kel Tec CP33
Not all large handguns have to be big-caliber hand cannons. In fact,
one of the most fun and interesting large-sized handguns available
produces negligible recoil, being chambered in 22 LR. That is the Kel
Tec CP33. Like so many of their guns, the Kel Tec CP33 breaks firearms
traditions in the most delightful way possible. Perhaps most obvious
among its innovations is the quad-stack magazine giving the big pistol a
capacity of 33+1. Then there is the fact that the exceptionally light Kel Tec CP33 employs a rifle-style charging handle, is threaded for a silencer, and is incredibly accurate.
 Versatile Loads – Taurus Judge
The Taurus Judge pistol earned its name from the number of judges who
reportedly carried it for protection. However, this substantial,
versatile revolver has since found popularity as a trail gun or “snake
gun” for defense against everything from larger predators to venomous
snakes. That popularity and versatility are both the result of the fact
that it can fire both the 45 Colt cartridge and 410 shotgun shells. In
fact, Taurus’ Raging Judge model can fire 45 Colt, 45 Schofield, 410
shotgun shells, and the powerhouse 454 Casull. That is a lot of
firepower from one wheelgun.
